And then I noticed...cat poop on the sofa. But not just on one pillow that could be washed. No, it's never that easy. It was on the crease between two pillows, thereby requiring TWO slipcovers be removed, stain sticked, and put in the washing machine. And then I noticed the rug. But not just a spot in the middle. No, right on the edge, butt up against the blanket carefully padding the edge of the hearth. Two more things needing to be sprayed, and one more to be washed. That's now two extra loads of laundry I wasn't anticipating in my "free" day. And then it dawned on me. The cat is probably covered in poop. I wrestle her to the bathroom and proceed to give her the sanitary cut she's long needed, but since she's "intractable" at the vet, we no longer take her to be groomed. Within two minutes, my PJ bottoms and my sweatshirt were stained with poop. That's one more load of laundry. Just when I thought the cat's agenda had been squelched and I could return to my menu planning, purging, and commissary shopping agenda, she begins throwing up. Thankfully, I caught her in time to keep her on the tile, but then I noticed a new batch of poop in her cat box (relief!). So, I tracked her down, checked her again, and realized we had another cleaning up to do. Back to the bathroom, this time much faster, and then a careful search for poop in the dining room--lo and behold, it was on the inside/outside rug I'm SO thankful my dear friend, Cary, recommended I buy for its easy clean-up properties. All the doors to the upstairs rooms are closed, so if Ricecake decides to continue usurping my agenda with her own, hopefully it'll be more easily contained.
Ricecake's wasn't the only agenda forced on me. Last week, while Cary was in town and both our kiddos were with grandparents, our car decided to sputter and shake. We spent the next 2 hours focused on the car, rather than shopping and tea drinking and dining out. Of course, we also drove away in a brand new (Loaner car!) sport Passat, feeling like royalty. And the car is now fixed and reliable, in-sha-Allah.
Despite my disgruntled feelings, I'm quickly reminded of Cary's comment--just think how much harder this would be if Ellen were with us! Indeed, my "Ellen free" days may be great times to sleep in, run when I want, accomplish a whirlwind of errands & house-cleaning, and just feel uber-productive, but they are also days when unexpected agendas are much easier to handle. So, thank you God, for seeing fit to let the car break down and the cat get sick in these few days without our sweet but in-the-middle-of-everything girl. Thank You, too, that You're far more interested in me becoming a lover of people and of You than you are of my checked-off to-do list.
What more can my Monday hold? We'll just have to wait to see... Off to switch the laundry loads.
